This web site/domain is actually one of my dreams. Some years ago I posted on my main web site, Kardas.net, that I would like to start a computer related page connected with that domain. Hey, I even have a single page somewhere in that labyrinth explaining basically what I wanted to do (and guess what? I could not even locate the page among the thousands of individual files I have in that site folder!) I envisioned it, more or less, as a history of personal computing based on the vintage puters which I have in storage, ranging from pre-Commodore stuff to the latest Apple goodies. I wanted to photograph the puters, adding something about their specs, operating systems and whatever else of a sort-of general nature that I could come up with. I also asked that if anyone has an old working puter that they might like to donate to the enterprise to contact me. One person did -- so I know the page is up there somewhere!

Since mid-2001 I started posting on the aol appl investor's message board, and discovered a fabulous group of people interested in Apple Computers NOT only as an investment, but also as a way of life. They are serious, and fun at the same time, always ready to help each other in an altruistic way. The posts range from techy, to simple-straight-forward, to things of a more personal nature - which exhibits a certain human quality, which often seems sort of lost and hard-to-find in this cyber universe.
It is they who stimulated me to finally begin this site, sort-of as an adjunct to the message board. Here I am attempting to serve as a clearing house and repository of information which is somewhat better clustered and easier to find than by scrolling down the list of hundreds of board posts over time.
If you need some of the most linkworthy web sites related to Apple Computers, they are in here. Would you like to know the first name of the posters (it is NOT always in a screen name, which totally confuses me sometimes) and in what part of the country they live (for potential get-togethers), you will find that info in the contributor's link.
The main site links are found at the bottom of each main section. Some may find this inconvenient, as opposed to having them in a frame on the left, or at the top, as they do on the Apple site. My reasoning is that one reads a page and THEN may may wish to visit some other site section. And if one is interested in returning to a particular part of the site more frequently than others, they can easily add that part to their favorites and keep the link handy where ever they stash them.
Other sections which I think would be kewl are the following :
and anything else that the members might want to include. This will only be worth all the time and effort if more than a couple board members send data, stories, etc. -- and otherwise participate in some way. I may add my own 2 centavos every once in a while, but it is meant to be YOUR windows (sic!) to the world -- let it all hang out!
I shall add whatever anyone feels is useful, and will NOT do any editing -- it will appear as sent to me via email. If pics are included with whatever you send, please park them on your own websites (as an aol user, you get at least 5 free web sites, or one for each screen name) -- the pic link will be included in the appropriate part of the text (which you should indicate to me). YES, your own web page will be linked to your profile, if you so desire -- and IF you have a banner (which is way kewler than a simple word link), please make it smallish to reduce loading time.
YOUR AppleBytes MESSAGE BOARD AWAY FROM AOL
Do you have a problem getting to the America Online aapl investor's message board when you are away from your computer, logging on at a library or whatever? Now you can always keep in touch where ever you are through the YahooGroups message board, signing-in with ANY screen name. I am new at moderating/being in charge of a message board, and only know them through a Beanie Baby board, with the same provider, that I was one of the first members of in November 1998 -- WOW, how time passes! From other boards that I have seen, they can get VERY roudy sometimes, with a lot of interlopers simply butting in with pure nonsense and overt smut. I have thus structured our new board by invitation only, and if some alien creature manages to sneak in, I apparently have the option to delete them from the group. I leave it to the discretion of our regulars to propose new members as they think appropriate.
This alternative board is browser and operating system independent. It is a message board which sends your messages to the rest of the list members (presupposing that others sign-up, of course) at whatever screen name they sign-up with.
It is really kewl -- we have calendars on which to post birthdays, MacWorld Expos, and loads of other stuff. I believe that one may sign up to receive individual email messages as they are sent (similar to the aol aapl board) or in digest form. There will be an archive of all the posts available. You may have your own Yahoo profile (do NOT even look for mine!), and add pics to the photo files which you may want to share with the rest of the gang. I have been on a similar list (related to Beanie Babies) for several years, and it if a lot of fun, especially when some of the gals get into a flame broil mode!.
I would suggest that ALL of our AOL group at least sign-up for this posting board -- it may be the ONLY way to receive messages from those who may NOT be using their aol account to communicate with the rest of us.
I have never started a list like this before, and I am NOT totally sure of all the little details. Since it is an email message board, I would suggest that when you sign-up, that you set your email receiving preferences to plain text instead of html - I personally find the html variety annoying. And while you are at the member sign-in page (bookmark it for future reference), please take the time to put your birthday and other important days on the approproate calendar month. I put in a couple when I was there.
Incidently, it is NOT a message board that is listed publically, so in theory, we shall NOT be getting a lot of kooks posting stuff -- aside from our own, of course! If you all think it should be a public listed group, I can change that, I think. Then we would get anybody who is interested in aapl, as a computer and investment, to join -- and unless you selected the digest version, you just might get piles of individual messages had we to go public -- which would probably overload our virtual mailboxes, which does happen on a genealogy list I am on.
YOUR AppleBytes CHAT Room
There was a 9-11 group chat, and there could have been one during the recent MacWorldExpo/earnings report, and for any other group special occasion. We now also have that capability on the chat link -- once again, all you have to do is sign-up and you will be ready when the moment presents itself. The chat is operating system/browser independent, or so it seems. Some are not. So get together every once in a while for a chat. Announce some topic or theme on the aol board and/or Yahoo message thingy, stipulating the time and day, and see if and how it works - I personally can NOT wait to see it in action! My chat name is Bytes, just so it does not scare you off when I might suddenly appear! I did NOT apply any filters, as we are all grown-ups and I do NOT think we need a movie-rating for when we interact.
Well, we can now have virtual parties!! For those special occasions when we might like to CHAT -- for example during an aapl Expo, product release, or whatever, we now have a 24/7 functional CHAT ROOM -- sign up and be ready for when everybody wants to get together and just let it roll! Open bar. Incidently, our chat planet is Mercury -- Messanger of the Gods!
This chatroom is browser and OS independent, as far as I can see, so even if you happen to be at the company PC [gag], you can still participate in the fun. All you have to do is sign-up, bookmark the sign-in page AND remember your login and password!
25 August 2002 - WAHHHHHHHHH -- BeSeen is going the way of many other FREE Internet services -- it will no longer host hit counters, chat rooms and whatever else it had to offer the netizens of the WWW! It is scheduled to go down today or tomorrow, and I will miss this well-organized and playful chat. Those who used it will recall the many kewl icons that one could include in one's message, and I would frequently pass around drinks to those chatting with me
I (bytes) even left a couple final notes (newest first) for anyone who might wander over to the chat room for one last visit [sniff]
So now I may try to find another source for this useful medium of communication -- much better than a posting board or emails because they take their time to open and reply to. The chat was in real time -- hey, maybe that new iChat that comes in the Jaguar package would fill the bill? hmmmmmm Can more than 2 use it at the same time?
Their hit counters will also be gone, which will cause me much grief for months to come. I have so many counters on so many different pages, it will take me forever to fish for them all. Luckily I already found a successor, and updated all the AppleBytes pages having counters on them. It was sort of hit or miss until I got the code exactly where it has to go.
The Apple orchard is always ripe for the pickin', and harvest time is every day, any season of the year. So feel free to bookmark the MAIN index page, and drop by anytime -- make sure you bring a friend. Our gates are always wide open -- especially to underprivileged kids in poor school districts.
So come on, gals and guys, let's roll! And always remember what they say --
An apple a day keeps the dark side at bay!
