The Maggie + Snuggles Report !
![]()
24 June 2002 - Marion had been planning a trip from Florida up the east coast to visit family and friends. On her way back, there was a possibility that she could make a quicky stop in my area, so I (Sonny) suggested that we could meet just off the major toll road at a McD's. Unfortunately my memory is geared to concept/key word recognition, and toll road can mean the NJ Turnpike or the Garden State Parkway -- and fast food eatery could be McD's, Burger King, Wendys or any number of others. There are several malls in my area, and I can never figure out which is which without really analyzing things -- and even then I have been known to make mistakes and wind up at the wrong one!
Anyway, I knew that a fast food place exists at a truck stop right off the exit of a big toll road, and remembered that the main local artery was Rt.206, which was only a slight help. So I told her to meet me at the McD's at the monster truck stop, which was located across from the toll road exit. She called me from the Statue of Liberty saying that she was on her way. I got my camera and stuff together and started off -- the day was very hot and muggy. When I arrived at the place I was referring to, it turned out to be a Wendys! I made 2 frantic calls to her cell phone and was only able to leave a voice message saying that she now had to look for a Wendys and not McD's -- hoping that she would get it before she just gave up and continued on.
I got myself some coffee and sat, somewhat dismayed, at a table near a window, hoping to see and somehow recognize someone I had never seen before and had known only from emails. I did wear a MacCentral t-shirt, which might help her at least figure out who I was. Just as I was getting ready to kick myself, I heard a soft voice from my left, "Sonny?", and there appeared the most rested-looking, charming lady who ever took a many hundred-mile car trip that I could ever imagine. Here finally was my gift partner in the aapl board holiday exchange, accompanied by her grand-daughter, Paige, her husband, Walter, and an amazingly tiny miniature poodle that she recently adopted, Maggie.

I think I may have encountered one other min-poodle before and it was yappy and as obnoxious as a chihuahua -- Maggie was friendly enough to walk across the table and snuggle up to me, and was as smoochy as my Sphynx cats! A real delight -- and she sure didn't take up as much room on my lap as my doberman used to!
After a few minutes, Walter came in and we chatted about their trip, where they plan to go for the next few days, what the board has been posting lately, how aapl was doing, and how they had been shuttling between a McD's a lot farther down Rt. 206 and back here, sort of thinking that I might have been somewhat absent-minded. Paige was happy with her new teddy bear, which she named Snuggles, and had been weaving small squares on a loom during the trip, one of which she made into a necklace which matched her checkered dress -- really cute.
I was absolutely thrilled to finally meet
Marion -- and was totally embarrassed due to my usual, sometimes
fuzzy translating skills from general concepts to more precise
details. The meeting was way too short, and hopefully it may be
repeated at greater length again in the future. For more

24 June 2002 - Subject: Meeting "Sonny" Date: vier., 05 juli 2002 20:25 From: Marion

I met Sonny on the NJ Turnpike at a Truck Stop near Trenton. It's nice to meet someone in person and he tells the story in his usual talented and witty style on AppleBytes. We made a car trip (logged on 3300 miles) to visit family in NJ. We leave Florida to get some nice cooler northern weather and we hit a "heat wave" <sigh>!
He's an adorable "old coot" but he can't tell the difference between a McDonald's or a Wendy's. Thanks again, Sonny, for the nice bear you gave my granddaughter.
