* Tenerife * Alexi, as he is known among his friends, works in a native medium from the south of the island known as tosca, piedrapomo or canto blanco. It is a light gray colored volcanic rock which had been used over the centuries, largely in buildings and other constructions, in much the same way as cinder blocks are employed today. His tools are few and simple -- the escoda, barreta and cuña de hierro. He is a pioneer in the present day use of this material as an art medium, and has recently exhibited some of his creations at several shows. His style is what one might consider minimalist classical, often combining the basic shapes of Greco-Roman prototypes with traditional early Canary forms,
and presenting the viewer with a table, planter, chair, a bureau (complete with drawers), a fountain or even a column or base --
which almost appear as if they were just unearthed at an archaeological site, as fresh and vibrant as they were millennia ago!
